Description

JS 94 / WA 94+ / VINOUS 93 / Decanter 92 / 3G - Gambero Rosso

A sophisticated pinot blanc with floral, sliced cooked-apple and mineral character. Medium to full body and bright acidity. Tight and vivid at the finish. I like the lightly bitter undertone and the complexity in the aftertaste. Drink or hold. JS

This wine is liquid magic and is always a highlight in my annual tasting from Alto Adige. The Cantina Terlano 2017 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is one of the most impressive expressions of the grape to emerge from this mountainous region in the far north of Italy. The 2017 vintage delivers enormous sharpness and attention to detail. It showcases pear, Golden Delicious apple, crushed limestone or chalk and spicy hints of Persian saffron. These delicate and elegant aromas are followed by a structured and concentrated mouthfeel with beautiful texture and length. The wine is fermented in oak barrel, thus adding to the palate richness, and it completes malolactic fermentation in full. It then ages on the lees for 12 months in traditional oak barrel.  WA

The 2017 Pinot Bianco Vorberg Riserva is subtly sweet and perfumed in the glass, as a note of peaches-in-cream fades to yellow apple, raw almond, lemony citrus, stone dust and white flowers. It’s soothing on the palate with its silky textures, yet contrasting tension builds through gentle acids and minerals, creating a ripe yet also savory and almost-salty expression. The finish is long, resonating on ripe orchard fruits with inner florals and a hint of lime zest. VINOUS

A preview of the warm 2017 vintage where the generous character of the harvest with the youthfulness of the wine create a heady impact. Slightly ester-y on the nose, extremely fresh with lime and lemon peel aromas, white rose and lavender with a toasty finish, the wine flows with vibrancy over the palate (almost electric) and is extremely salty at the end. The acid is very well-binded with fruit and the typical grace and weight of Terlano Pinot Blancs. Decanter
